American Adventures: True Stories from America's Past, 1770-1870 (Morrie Greenberg)
I have scheduled this workbook because I bought it and didn’t want to “waste” it. I don’t think it’s necessary, but it adds some interesting and lesser-known stories about early American history to your study. Each section starts out with a timeline (so you can see what else was happening near the time of each story) and then has a featured story (which you may want to read aloud to your 3rd grader). After the story there are various language arts activities. There are writing and journal activities (like “Write three important things you learned from…”), and vocabulary activities (find the word closest to the meaning of the underlined word, etc.). There are also discussion activities (think it through, take a side, then and now) and more. Some of the activities could really be a lot of fun and you could make a video tape for some of them such as the following: “Imagine you are a radio or television talk show doctor living in the early 1800’s. Prepare and present a program where a number of people phone in with different ailments. As the doctor, present a remedy for each call.”

All in all it’s not a bad book to work through, but it could be considered a little "advanced" for an AVERAGE 3rd grader. I think my son will enjoy it, but it would still be quite appropriate for a 6th grader.
