Topic 27 MaterialsClick the picture of the books to the left to get more information about the titles and materials used in this topic - including reviews, current prices (new & used) and more!

This history topic is about Abraham Lincoln, slavery and contains and introduction to the Civil War. I don't believe that younger children are ready to really delve into the horrors of war so I only touch on the Civil War enough for them to get a feel for it. If you are doing this study with an older child, you may want to add more on this subject.
I try to cover slavery in such a way that children can have some feelings about the people involved and to THINK about why and how people were hurt by it.

Scroll down to the schedule below for all of the activities! While studying this topic you will get to:

  • Learn about Abraham Lincoln and slavery
  • Learn that the underground railroad wasn't really a railroad at all
  • Read about the quarrel between the states and the war it caused
  • Create and color a lift the flap plantation project

    and of course much more!

    Key:
Red indicates an item that should be found at many well-stocked libraries

M next to a title indicates there is a corresponding map assignment in the Map or Globe section of the schedule

T next to a title indicates there is a corresponding Timeline suggestion in the Timeline section of the schedule.
