Thirteen Days

Thirteen Days

Thirteen Days is rated PG-13 because of “brief, strong language” (with some G-d’mns). It is a very engaging and memorable movie to illustrate the Cuban Missile Crisis. Take a look at the review on Common Sense Media to get an idea of what ages it might be appropriate for. Our kids have seen it a couple of times, including a preteen. I recommend you PREVIEW this movie as it may not be appropriate for your family.
Another option is Missiles of October (see below).

Lyndon B. Johnson

Lyndon B. Johnson: Thirty-sixth President 1963-1969 (Getting to Know the Us Presidents)

Otter LOVES these books written and illustrated by Mike Venezia. Even my big kids read them all as older teens because the information is presented in such an engaging and easy to retain style.

All of the Venezia books I schedule in are optional for the president's study, but they are so fun, you might want to check out at least a few. Most libraries will have these books, so you probably won't need to purchase any.

Flying to the Moon: An Astronaut’s Story

Skip this book if your kids aren't really into astronauts and space. Otter is and he enjoys reading about all the details. If your child doesn't...this will probably be a boring book for him/her.

You probably won't want to watch all of these astronaut movies. Just pick one or two unless your child (or spouse, lol) is really into this kind of thing. Apollo 13 (below) is probably the most engaging and memorable, but you may want to preview it. Otter has seen it several times since he was about nine.
