Regret Free Parenting: Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Right

No mother wants to look back when her children are grown and have regrets. "What could I have done differently? What did I do wrong? How could I have done a better job?" Every mom wants to raise her children and do the best job possible.

Regret Free Parenting is a book that tries to help you realize just what it means to be a "good mother". The author, Catherine Hickman, has almost 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist, women's ministry director and is the founder of Intentional Moms. She tries to get moms to focus on how to raise children by staying focused on several principles:

  • Understand your purpose as a mother
  • Know and affirm your child
  • Have a vision
  • Develop emotional intelligence
  • Maintain your position
  • Address your fears
  • Be dependent on God

Here's the crux of the book:

"Great mothering allows a mom to make decisions that are based on the needs of the child - not the needs, fears, or unhealthy expectations of the mom. An intentional mom knows how to recognize when her own past is interfering in the present-day moments of her child's life, and she appreciates the whole of the experience, not simply the immediate moment. The intentional mom parents from a fullness instead of an emptiness and maintains a laser focus on the well-being of her children...
...her children are as much a tool God provides for her own development and change as they are a new vehicle of joy and purpose.

You have to make an intentional plan to parent your children..."to be confident and keep your values and beliefs at the forefront of your parenting role. You actively seek out ways to demonstrate those foundational principles as well as instill them in your children."

Catherine gives you pointers on how to accomplish the above and includes questions at the end of the chapter to encourage you to think about how you're doing in your own life and how you can implement her suggestions by developing a plan of intentional parenting.

I think Catherine has a lot of good ideas that could potentially help someone improve their parenting, but I don't think her suggestions will guarantee anyone a regret free future. There are too many external influences in children's lives. What we do as mother's is extremely important but our behavior is not necessarily an indicator of how things will turn out. Also, this books if for MOMS not dads. It's very mother-centric and I think she does a family unit a disservice by not really including dads in the mix. A dad is an integral part of parenting. It's NOT just about the mom.

Maybe I'm growing out of parenting books now (my youngest is a teen). Regret Free Parenting didn't really resonate with me. However, if you are just starting out with some little ones, you might appreciate some of the book's advice and examples.
